DIY Dog Hoodie

How many times have you bought something and were not entirely satisfied? The colors were off, and the design didn't suit the household's tastes, or the clothing was too long, even if it fit around the pet's chest. I bet such a problem has arisen more than once, perhaps another, when buying something, we are not fully satisfied. Most often, however, it is the appearance of the clothing that causes the problem. There are many tastes, and they say there's no accounting for them, but what if the thought crosses our mind: how do I make dog clothes? Normally! Believe me - a sewing machine and an idea are all you need to create your dream, functional garment!
Material for dog clothing - what to choose?
There are many materials available, and I think the question should rather be - what material would be best for, say, a sweater? I first decide what the clothing is for, then even by browsing the internet, we can find the best fabric properties. A dog sweater should be:
- warm,
- comfortable,
- ideally wrinkle-free, so that simply hanging the garment is enough and it has no creases,
- not restrict movement,
- not irritate the pet's skin.
The simplest material for this would be, for example, fleece - it meets all the above characteristics, down to the last detail. Similarly, thicker cotton would be ideal for this, and we can line the garment with fleece or another "furry" material. For a rain jacket, we would choose a completely different material, but we always select fabrics based on needs, never otherwise.
Method of fastening dog hoodies and jackets
Here, too, we have quite a wide range of choices. We can sew in:
- a zipper,
- buttons, and there are many motifs and patterns in various colors, shapes, and sizes,
- velcro,
- snaps.
I have listed the most commonly used ones, which work best for pets, because there are many ways to fasten clothing, but here we look for methods that won't bother the dog or us when putting on or taking off the clothes. We mostly see dog coats with snaps, but a zipper is also very convenient to use.
This elegant PUCCI sweater fastens with buttons. The sweater is non-irritating and soft to the touch.
Where to get patterns for dog clothing?
Every dog has different dimensions, so there's no such thing as finding a perfect pattern. Of course, you can search online for something like, "it will fit more or less," but that's not what we're aiming for. The reason we're undertaking to sew dog clothes is so that they fit perfectly. You need to measure your dog properly - just as we measure ourselves when sewing, we do the same with our pet and add about 2-3 cm for finishing. If I'm sewing independently, after taking measurements, I outline them on a piece of paper, cardboard, or Bristol board and hold it against the body to check where I might need to add or subtract something. I'd rather spend more time playing with a piece of paper than cutting fabric incorrectly and having to buy more. If the templates are ready and modified, we move on to the material! Sewing dog clothes yourself
Dog clothes come in various patterns. The pattern will change depending on what you want to sew. From what I've seen, after an unsatisfactory purchase, some people often create a pattern from what was previously ordered. They cut it at the seams and work on their own, and it's really not complicated. With the help of sewing tutorials on YouTube, you can quickly master the basics of tailoring on a machine. You only need a few things:
- basic sewing supplies,
- material – here we need to choose a fabric that meets our expectations,
- accessories – buttons, patches, fabric paints, sequins, colored threads, etc.
The idea itself is half the battle. A very nice and simple way to decorate, for example, dog sweaters is to sew on or iron on colorful patches. You'll find many such accessories in most haberdashery shops – a true paradise for most people starting their adventure with sewing or knitting. Knitting needles and crochet hooks are also a very original way to make something unique, but this usually requires more time devoted to learning. I'm not saying it's impossible – because accessories like hats, socks, or scarves can be knitted in the same way we knit for ourselves, and there are tons of magazines with ready-made patterns in bookstores and newsstands. Not to mention the internet!
The Adidog brand is an absolute sales hit. The T-shirt is very comfortable and stylish. We recommend it!
Where to buy ready-made dog hoodies and sweaters?
The availability of clothing for our four-legged friends is growing rapidly. It's a fact that there may be fewer brick-and-mortar stores, but you can find a great many online stores with a diverse assortment. The most important thing when buying such clothes is contact with the seller – they should help with every issue and answer questions. Often in our store, owners contact us by email, phone, or even by messaging on Messenger beforehand to get help with choosing the right size or to ask if a given size is suitable according to their measurements. I see nothing wrong with this, as I prefer to make a successful sale rather than having the customer return packages and wait additional days for the correct order. So it's worth asking even about the smallest thing, but a good seller will not skip any question, and will even answer them automatically.
Is it worth making something for your dog yourself, or buying it? Both! With time, you can truly create wonders, and all it takes is good intentions and an idea. Nothing more. Happy creating!
