What to do when a dog doesn't want to drink?

Water is life. A dog's body is 60% water, so it is very important that canines drink enough of it. Dehydration is a life-threatening condition and should not be underestimated. How do you know if your dog is drinking properly?

Dog doesn't want to drink water - causes and diseases

There can be many causes, but each of them can lead to dehydration, which must not happen. The easiest way to check this is by the skin - you should grasp a fold of skin on the neck and check if the skin returns to its previous form. If the skin automatically returns to its place, the dog is properly hydrated. If, however, it is stiff, remains in place, or takes longer to return to its original shape - we can talk about dehydration. Dehydration is divided into several types, and everything depends on the amount of fluid loss and the level of electrolytes in the body: - Isotonic - sodium is flushed out as a result of vomiting, diarrhea, kidney failure, diabetes insipidus, or peritonitis. - Hypotonic - water and electrolytes are lost due to severe diarrhea, but without vomiting, due to improper use of diuretics, and also due to lack of access to drinking water. - Hypertonic - only water is lost, and such dehydration occurs with severe burns, and most often results from heat stroke! In such moments, you should carefully observe your pet, even if indigestion occurs. The dog then does not want to drink and loses interest in food during the illness. Even simple drooling due to injury, or a foreign body in the throat, can lead to the same. Similarly, pay close attention when your dog isn't drinking, to whether your dog's belly has enlarged, which may indicate ascites. Here, you should immediately go to the vet to rule out many life-threatening diseases for the animal. Do not underestimate the heat, especially when the dog's coat is dark in color. In such weather, the dog quickly loses water, and you should ensure constant access to it in the form of travel dispensers. Similarly, a dog after anesthesia does not drink water, until a certain point. After a day, when it returns to form and the drugs wear off, it should eagerly drink. But if you see that this condition persists, you should immediately go to the clinic where the procedure was performed. Also, remember that after surgery, a dog may vomit after drinking water, but this should all subside after the drugs stop working.

There are various products, powders, available that replenish electrolyte balance, but such supplements should be consulted with a doctor beforehand. It may turn out that the dog will need to be rehydrated with an IV drip and basic tests performed to see what caused the dehydration. Most importantly - nothing by force! You cannot force a dog to drink; it may simply not have the strength to drink water properly.

Conversely - the dog drinks a lot of water and doesn't hold urine

First, consider whether the dog that frequently urinates isn't walked enough, or if it has been properly taught how to relieve itself. Many people blur the line between illness and behavioral problems, but if we categorically rule out the latter option, we must look for the cause of all this. Such disorders can result from various factors that influence proper urination. A dog may have neuromuscular, anatomical, hormonal, traumatic, or even psychological problems. Abnormal anatomical structure of the urinary tracts, hormonal disorders after a procedure such as sterilization, post-accident conditions, and even owners affecting the dog's psyche, can cause problems with this.
